RHTA Meeting Minutes Date: September 26, 2018
Location: Griswold Middle School Time: 3:45 to 5:00
1) Presidents’ report: Michelle Bartha and Lori Cebelius :
Ø 139 “Wear Red for Ed” t-shirts were ordered. Thank you for supporting public education.
Ø On November 5th, there will be a “Teachers and the Law” conference at Haddam Killingworth Middle School from 4-6. Rocky Hill teachers are invited to attend.
Ø You received your membership cards. Your CEA membership number stays with you for life
Ø Posters for teacher’s rooms highlight the advantage of being in a union
Ø Buyers edge is a benefit to CEA membership. Use your membership number on the CEA website to save on items such as appliances, cars, etc.
Ø ALICE training:
- Part I: online certificate
- Part II: Simulation
- We were asked by the ALICE Institute to sign a liability waiver. This liability waiver is for the simulation and applies only to the ALICE Institute. If a teacher is hurt, the district is liable for medical expenses under workman comp.

3) Committee news:
Ø Social Committee reported that the Social at On The Border’s on September 7, 2018 was the best attended of all with 63 attending.
Ø Membership Committee reported that cards were distributed and the roster is updated. Unfortunately, no calendars were provided this year from CEA
4) Grievance Report:
- No active grievances
5) New business:
Ø Samantha Steinman sent a thank you note for being chosen for the 2017-2018 RHTA scholarship. The note was read at the meeting
Ø A thank you note was sent from The Connecticut Education Foundation for RHTA’s donation, specifically for their support for “Hands Across the Green” Golf Tournament that raises money for The Children’s Fund to assist Connecticut’s needy school children
Ø A representative from CEA will be coming to the RHTA meeting on October 24th. The topic being presented is FMLA – the Family Medical Leave Act.
Ø Consider attending one of the various teacher retirement workshops across the state. Register on line at http://www.cea.org/retirementWorkshops/ Select the workshops you would like to attend using the form below. You will be required to login with your Membership ID in order to register for these workshops:

Ø Make sure to read your August CEA Advisor Special Retirement issue titled: Understanding and Planning Your Retirement. It came in your mail, but if you didn’t get it, it can be accessed on line. The yearly August publication is designed to help you better understand and plan your retirement, giving you:
o the dates of the CEA Regional Retirement Workshops
o a summary of benefits provided you by the Connecticut State Teachers’ Retirement System
o a review of recent legislative changes
o important investment information
